Preschool Project: Spelling and Writing Names

If you’ve got a little one at home head off to preschool this year, or if you just want to make sure they are prepared when they start kindergarten, here’s another skill to work on.  (Sorry for the lack of pictures…I’ve made a great effort to keep Bug’s (real) name off the blog so I can’t show you any of our name crafts.)

Learning to Spell and Write Names

I spelled Bug’s name in wooden letters over his changing table.  As soon as he started babbling, I would point to each letter and say it every time I changed his diaper.  He could spell his name before he was two.  Find somewhere prominent to place your child’s name, spell it on the refrigerator, make a sign and decorate and go over it every day.

The next step is learning to write it.

Now, let me be a preschool teacher for a moment:

PLEASE teach your child the proper upper/lowercase letters in their name.   If you teach them to write it in all uppercase letters then their preschool or kindergarten teacher has to unteach that and reteach how to write it correctly.

Years ago I found the best site for making custom tracer pages.    Just chose your font (print or cursive!) and type in what you want it to print.  I use it for making name sheets but you can use it for spelling words too!
