Thomas and Friends: The Birthday Express review and giveaway!

It’s no secret that we are BIG Thomas fans around here! Need more proof? So taking Bug’s opinion of the new Thomas & Friends: The Birthday Express might be a little biased. :)

I, on the other hand, have a more objective opinion. I was delighted to have some fresh Thomas stories to watch. Since we are a no cable household, we are limited to what’s on Netflix and our DVD’s. Which is an adequate selection for a normal person, but if you have a child that only watches ONE show 98% of the time, our Thomas episodes (both on DVD and Netflix are well worn and well-memorized. Bug’s only 2.5 and he’ll start telling me what’s coming up next on a particular episode. I’ve even caught Hubs humming a tune from one of the episodes (and he’s not around nearly as much as I am to watch it!)

Thomas & Friends: The Birthday Express comes packaged with a wooden train whistle which Bug loved! He’ll blow it and say, “That’s Gordon’s whistle.” And he’ll blow it again and say, “That’s Thomas’ whistle.” Again and again and again.

I loved how all the episodes on this DVD were all about parties – mostly birthdays (I think there was one “holiday party” episode). Because it comes with the wooden train whistle decorated with balloons and “Celebrate with Thomas” painted on it AND it’s about birthday parties, I think it would make a great birthday present for a train-loving child!

The episodes were good. I had a chuckle at the “twist” in the episode about Thomas’ mystery passenger. And in the episode about Percy’s “special special”, Percy figures out how to fix a problem that he created. And when Freddy finds out that Colin the Crane has never been to a party (because he’s a crane and the docks and he can’t move like the trains can), Freddy rushes around Sodor and enlists the help of others to move the holiday party to the docks for Colin. It’s a good lesson on thinking of others.

I’m always pleased with the morals and life lessons in every episode of Thomas and Friends. As tired as I get of hearing, ‘They’re two, they’re four, they’re six, they’re eight, shunting trucks and hauling freight. Red and green and brown and blue, they’re the really useful crew…” (yes I just did that from memory and yes, I’ll be singing it all day now…) I know that there are worse things Bug could want to watch on TV. I’m glad he picks Thomas!
