Toddler Talk Thursday – Bedtime Stories

Crazy About My Baybah I’m so excited because my topic got picked for this week’s Toddler Talk Thursday, so I get to be the featured blog!  :)))

This week’s topic is: What are you and your toddler reading before bed?

Bug LOVES books and that makes me SO HAPPY because I LOVED books when I was a kid.  I was quite the book worm.  My mom read to me every night.  I read on a 2nd grade level in kindergarten.  And I think it had everything to do with my mom reading to me and instilling in me a love of books and reading.  I’m so glad Bug is headed down that path too!

The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's StoriesWe read 2 or 3 (or 5!) stories at bedtime.  Our favorites vary.  But one thing we always read from is Bug’s Beginner’s Bible.  His favorite stories from it are as he puts it:

  • “Pharoah, GO!”  (the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt)
  • “Ho-ho’s Boat” (Noah’s Ark – Noah is drawn as a guy with white hair and a long beard, in Bug’s mind, that makes him Santa Claus….)

After we read a couple books and Bug is all tucked in for the night, he continues to “read” himself to sleep.  He tells me which books he wants in his bed and it is a common sight to go in after he is asleep and see this:

He is on top of and surrounded by books and he still has one in his hand!  He literally fell asleep in mid-book!  :)  I have to fish books out from under him and turn him over and get him all cozy and tucked back in.  I love it!   :)

We took Bug to see Thomas the Train this past Sunday.  We visited the Souvenir Tent.  They had Thomas the Train tracks and trains and blocks and sets.  They had Thomas on just about anything you could put Thomas on – bags, hats, tshirts, balloons, backpacks, candy, etc, etc.  And out of that WHOLE tent, you know what he asked for?  A new Thomas book!   He looked at it for the entire train ride!

We have our fair share of Thomas, Dinosaur Train and Chugginton books that make it through bedtime story rotation.

Other favorites include:

  • I Love You as Big as the World – which prompted our saying, “I love you BIG!”  I can say “I love you big!” and Bug says, “I wuv ewe BIIIIG, Mommy!”  AWWW!
  • Don’t Do That, Dexter! – which is a book I have in my preschool class.  I’ve used it to teach Bug his first Bible verse, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right.”  Ephesians 6:1   Hearing your 2 year old say a Bible verse is such a blessing!!
  • We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – he loves that one!
  • Llama Llama Mad at Mama  – we BOTH love this one!  About little Llama shopping with his Mama!

Thanks again to all the wonderful Momma’s that host Toddler Talk Thursday for picking my topic!
