Couponing to help others

I know of two ways that your coupons can help others.

The first is Coupons for Troops at The Happy Housewife’s blog.

On overseas military bases, commissaries will accept coupons up to 6 months past their expiration date! The Happy Housewife matches up military families with people over here that are willing to send their expired (or not expired, they can be in date coupons that you aren’t going to use). They can be printed off the internet but they cannot be store specific.

Currently there are not any military families without a “coupon donor” but you can be placed on a waiting list to be contacted when a family comes available. I signed up.

Also, if you are a military family stationed overseas or know of one, you can contact The Happy Housewife through the above post to become a beneficiary family.

The other way helps out our furry friends and I’ve been doing it for years. There is a non-profit organization in my area (Birmingham, AL) called Friends of Cats and Dogs Foundation that helps to find homes for pets in local shelters. They also have people that volunteer to take in “foster pets”. To help the foster families with the expenses of caring for extra pets, they accept coupons for pet food and pet supplies as well as cleaning supplies (because pets make messes!) Unlike the Coupon for Troops program these coupons need to be in-date (and please take the expiration date into consideration when you are mailing them. Make sure they have plenty of time to receive, sort and forward to a family before the expiration date.) You can read more about the Foundation at the link above, find out more about the coupon program here, or start sending in your coupons to:
