7 Things To Do When You “Spring Forward” for Daylight Savings Time

Here are 7 things you should do every time you change your clocks.   Why?  Because these things are best done twice a year and if you do it when you change the clocks you know you won’t forget!

1. Reverse the blades on your ceiling fan.
Ceiling fan blades are angled and in the summer you want the air to blow down.  In the winter, I flip the switch to reverse the rotation of the blades – this pulls air UP and helps heat circulate throughout the room better.  With spring on the way, it’s time to switch them back.   Also, I learned the hard way – DUST the blades before reversing them.

2. Change your furnace filter!
Ok, this should be done MORE than twice a year.  But, this is a good reminder to do it this weekend if you don’t remember to do it regularly.   And to make sure you DO it regularly in the future, check out Filter Time!  You set up your service and they SEND you a filter when it’s time to change yours.  So change it when the package arrives and you’re done!

3. Change your batteries in your smoke detectors.
I think this one has been going around long enough that everyone knows it.  But here’s your reminder to pick up 9-volt batteries before Sunday so you can get those batteries changed!

4. Test and replace batteries in emergency flashlights.
Also a good idea, make sure those emergency flashlights are where they are supposed to be.  Flashlights in our house tend to wander.  With spring storms around the corner, having working flashlights for when the power goes out is a good plan!

5. Check your dryer vent and give it a good cleaning.
Now is a great time to check on that external dryer vent and make sure it’s clear and clean.  Give the lint trap in the dryer a good cleaning too.

6. Check your medicine cabinet and throw away expired medication.
For prescription medication, it would be wise to contact your pharmacy and ask how best to dispose of it.  OTC medicine can be tossed in the trash.

7. Rotate/flip your mattress.
Extend the life of your mattress by changing up where you’re lying on it!

Can you think of any twice yearly housekeeping items I didn’t think of?
