Does contacting companies for coupons really work?

The Contact Us daily feature is something I started last summer because I saw how good it was. You write to a company and give them your honest opinion of their product(s). Companies want consumers to be happy, they want to know what they’re doing right and what they’re doing wrong. And the only way to know that is to get feedback from their customers. So if you take the time to give them feedback, they will generally reward you with coupons.

I’ve been getting some negativity about this. Oh, occasionally someone will comment that they got coupons from this company or that company. But it seems for every, “I got coupons!” comment I’m getting THREE, “Well, I wrote to this company and they didn’t send me anything!” comments. So, I want to take some time to go over the ins and outs of contacting a company.

  1. Be honest. You’re not trying to sell the company on their own product. Just tell them what you think about it. (Good or bad!)
  2. Be short. Most of my e-mails are about three sentences. “Hey, my family loves your -fill in product- because it tastes great. Thanks for making such a wonderful product.” Or, “Your -fill in product- is fantastic. It simplifies my life because it -insert product feature-. Thanks so much!” See how easy?
  3. Etiquette. You may be unhappy about a product but don’t YELL! or ramble on and on. Tell them politely what was wrong with their product (faulty, spoiled, not what expected, just didn’t like, etc.)
  4. DON’T ASK FOR COUPONS. I can’t stress this one enough! You’re not e-mailing them to ask them for coupons. You are providing feedback to them with the hopes that they will reward you with coupons. If you ask for coupons, this is what you will get, “While we wish that we could fulfill every request for coupons that we get, we cannot send those at this time.” Or something of a similar nature.
  5. Some companies don’t send coupons. It’s just part of it. It’s a chance. You can write to them and hope for coupons or you can not do it and never know if you would’ve gotten coupons or not. Since I post the link to the company’s contact us page it should only take 3-5 minutes a day to send an e-mail. To me, that’s worth it if I might get something out of it.

And here’s my brag:

I contacted Zatarain’s a couple weeks ago. I got (2) 50c/2 coupons in the mail last week.

This week at Winn-Dixie, Zatarain’s rice mixes were BOGO $2.00. There were no available Zatarain’s coupons anywhere. So at $2 for 2 it was a so/so deal.

BUT I had just gotten my coupons for Zatarain’s!!

So I used one of my 50c/2 coupons (which doubles to $1) and got both of the them for just $1.00!

You can follow the contact us program daily or just check in on Sunday’s for the weekly recap!
