Step 2: Be Ethical

1. Make sure you understand coupons. Do you know the difference in a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon? What’s the difference in one per purchase and one per transaction? What is stacking coupons? Did you know that stores get reimbursed for the face value of the coupon plus 8c handling? So you’re not taking anything away from the store when you use coupons. To use coupons correctly you have to understand them.
2. Make sure you know your store’s coupon policy. Do they double? Do they allow stacking? Do they take competitor’s coupons? Print their policy from their website and keep it with you when you shop.
3. Never ever ever photocopy a coupon. This along with a few other rules are very important. Only use a coupon on the product/size/type/amount listed on the coupon. Trying to use a coupon for $2 off a 64oz product when you are only buying the 32oz variety is fraud. Don’t use a $1 off 2 product coupon if you only have one of the products in your transaction – that’s fraud. Yes, fraud is a harsh word but there is no way to tiptoe around it. Rules are rules, even if you are on TV.
4. You are not “getting away” with anything by using coupons!! It’s not a big secret, it’s not a fancy trick. It’s a legitimate way to purchase things. If manufacturer’s didn’t want us to use coupons, they wouldn’t keep putting them out there to be used!! Don’t stand in the check-out at the store and worry because you think you are “getting away” with something. As long as you are using your coupons correctly, you have nothing to worry about.

Tune in tomorrow for the next lesson on practical couponing!
