Alabama’s Back to School Tax-Free shopping weekend is July 19th – 21st, 2024
Tax free does not mean that the tax rate will be 0% in all areas. Alabama will be waiving the STATE tax but there are still city and county taxes. Some cities and counties may waive their taxes as well. You can check out this list to look if your city and county will be participating also. Be sure to check for both COUNTY and CITY.
For example, I can check Jefferson County and see that they are waiving 1% of their 2% tax across the county. From there I can check specific cities in Jefferson County, like Trussville, who is waiving all city taxes as well. So I know that any eligible purchases I make in Trussville will only be taxed at 1%.
It may be beneficial to drive to another city or across county lines if the one you’re in is not waiving the additional taxes.
Here’s a list of other items that you might not have thought of that are tax free:
- Printers
- Printer Ink
- Computers
- Computer Software (excluding games)
- Books that are under $30 per book
- Paint (acrylic, tempura and oil)
- Clay and glazes
- Adult diapers
- Some infant items (baby bibs, receiving blankets) (select states – see lists)
- Pajamas
Be sure to check your state list just to confirm.
