I’ve had the privilege to travel to almost half the states of the United States and am looking forward to traveling more now that my son is old enough to enjoy the experience of travel.
But I have always lived in the same state. I know the South is a mystery to those who have never lived here but I can’t imagine myself living anywhere else.
Spring is azaleas and dogwoods, Easter dresses and egg hunts and the whole family gathered around ham and potatoe salad on a Sunday afternoon.
Summer is lazy days, lemonade & iced tea, porch swings and summer gardens full of okra, corn, squash and tomatoes. Plus, lots of swimming to keep cool! We get 5 good months of swimming and sunbathing. We do not lack for Vitamin D and sunshine in the South.
Fall is football, cooler days, beautiful colors, leaf piles and still plenty of time to enjoy outside. Pumpkin patches, bonfires and roasting marshmallows, hayrides, trick-or-treating in the beautiful crisp weather.
Winter is a reset. We don’t get a lot of snow but we get a break from the heat.
Life is slower in the South if you let it be. We live just outside the big city so we still have the best of country living just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of the city.
I don’t see myself ever living any closer to the city than I do now (in fact, sometimes I wish I was a little farther out in the country with a little more land!) and I certainly don’t see myself living in a different state.
No matter where I go, I always come back to Sweet Home Alabama.
