New from author Tamera Alexander, To Win Her Favor

An Irish-born son far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and start a farm, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the annual Drayton Stakes at Nashville’s racetrack––the richest race run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance, and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder, Maggie’s father––aging, yet wily as ever––makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail––Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

Cullen and Maggie need each other in order to achieve their dreams. But their stubborn, wounded hearts––and the escalating violence from a “secret society” responsible for lynchings and midnight raids––may prove too much for even two determined souls.

Summer reading isn’t just for the kids!  Moms deserve a little summer reading too!  But if you (like me) haven’t picked up a book that wasn’t illustrated, board or pop-up in, I don’t know, a decade – the big question is, what do you read?

Tamera Alexander has released the second book in her Belle Meade Plantation Series.  It appears that the series is more about the place and not the same people so you can pick up the second one without reading the first one.  However, the first one To Whisper Her Namelooks more up my alley being set shortly after the Civil War and all about tensions between former Confederates and those formerly with the Union.

To Win Her Favor, even though set in roughly the same time as the first one, is about a woman who wants nothing more than to race her mare.  The horse race stuff was kind of lost on me though.  I do love that the man Maggie (the story’s main character) ends up marrying is Irish and that the book dips into the history of the Irish coming to America.  Being Irish and born and raised in the South, he’s my kind of character.    Even though I didn’t love the book (I really had to skim over a lot of the horse stuff and it was longer than any book I’ve read in a long time) I love that we, as Christian women, have book choices where a man and a woman fall in love and it not get nasty.  You know what I mean.  I downloaded some historical fiction books a couple years ago from Amazon because they were free and they sounded interesting.  Strong female characters making it against all odds kind of stories.  But then those strong female characters found a love interest and whoa.  Put an end to me downloading free books from Amazon, that’s for sure.  In To Win Her Favor we see a strong supportive leading man who also becomes the Maggie’s husband.  And the rest is all a tasteful, respectful, wholesome image of Biblical marriage.
