Reading is (and has always been) important in our house. I was very bookish as a child and still love to read even though I don’t have much time for it.
I’m very blessed that at 6 Bug loves to read (and he’s quite good at it) and he loves to be read too. We still read every night at bedtime. I never realized that wasn’t normal – my mom read to me every night until I was at least 8. But I hear from so many other parents that the bedtime reading routine stops before 6 in most homes!
I think our nightly bedtime story (that started when Bug was just an infant – even before he was big enough to know what was going on) is part of the reason why he loves books so much. I hope you read to your kids every day (it doesn’t have to be at bedtime – that’s just what works for us!) I’m planning a future post on how to help your kids love reading. Below, you’ll get a chance to share your ideas with me too.
One of our favorite things about Summer is Summer Reading at the Library! I hope you’re plugged in to your local library for summer reading. And also check out these retailers that offer incentives to keep your kids reading over the summer. One way to keep kids excited about reading is to let them read things that interest them. My son would be all about these National Geographic books about ocean animals and planets! Plus, the large color photos make them very intriguing!

Well.. MY favorite book is Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. Best version of Beauty and the Beast that I’ve ever read. The boys favorite book is a silly three little pigs book that we have.
We read a lot of books. They also see me reading books.
My son’s favorite book is The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.. He loves spiders!

These would be for my niece and I’m not sure what her favorite book is but I know that she loves any book that has a princess.
My son is grown now (this is for my niece) but I think he got his love of reading from us. His dad and I were/are voracious readers and we always included him. We read to him every chance we could from the time he was a baby.
Unfortunately the comment section is gone from the Summer Reading post but I just wanted to say that I think the programs are a great incentive for getting kids to pick up a book and read. My son used to have a jar and for every book he read he got to put a token in it. So many tokens equaled a special treat. It worked for use.

My favorite book is Guess How Much I Love You, its so much fun to read to the kids!
My daughters favorite books right now are anything Pokemon or bible stories.
My son loves the “Elephant and Piggie” books by Mo Willems.
My favorite as a kid were the Little House books. My son loves any Berenstein Bear books.

I make sure my niece has a wide selection of books to choose from. This way, there is always something interesting for her to read.

Books are readily available in our home, we love hanging out at the library on Saturdays and during the summer we encourage them to read by participating in summer reading programs.
Out of the selection from the prize pack, it would be Weird by True Fact Pack 2. My child’s favorite book is Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales.

I try to just make reading aloud to my students entertaining and offer a wide selection of books and magazines.
We read every night before bedtime and visit the library once a week.
