Growing Up Online – teaching your kids about online saftey
The internet is a MUCH different place than it was when I first start using it back in it’s early days. (AOL via dialup, anyone?)
We teach our kids safety crossing the street, safety in a crowded mall, safety at home alone….but are we teaching them enough about internet safety?

Check browser history often
My children have to ask before they go online. Our computer is in our livingroom so I am able to see what they are doing at all times, since we have a very small house.
I would love to win
Forgot to leave my tip. My kid is only allowed online in the family room and no giving out any personal info
His computer is in the living room so he can’t hide things.
Watch carefully the sites your child is going to and remind them how important it is not to give out their personal information online.
Watch them when they’re online and monitor their search history.
never leave your credit card/debit card information saved on sites like amazon/paypal. my son will be 4 next month and every time he plays on the kindle fire, he ends up on amazon!!!
and always just double check to see what they’re doing..i always like to ‘check in on him’ when he’s playing.
Constant supervision – computer is in a public area (living room), I watch what they’re doing, and I require them to keep me informed of their social media and email passwords – that way they know I can check up on their online activities anyway I want to.
I monitor what my son views online.
Use the blocking software too.
My daughter is just 15 months but I make sure to have the child lock on. My phone goes on airplane mode lol.
Always know where your kids are!
Mine are only four, but when they’re older, I intend to be sure that I always have access to what they do online. And being secretive about being online will lose them their internet privileges.
My son is too young to get online, but if he was old enough I would put security passwords on sites he could not go to :)
We keep the computer in a common area (no smart phones or internet accessible devices in bedrooms) and check browser history daily.
If I had a child that was old enough to get on the computer I would only allow computer use while I am in the room until I felt they were responsible enough to have more freedom.
Stress the importance of never giving out personal info.
I tell the kids not to chat with anyone they do not know and to not give out personal information.
