There are several different ways you can do this depending on what you have on hand.
Regardless of how you make them, you’re going to need:
- Peanut Butter
- Birdseed
- butter knives or plastic knives (for spreading)
- yarn
- newspaper to spread out and paper plates to catch extra birdseed so as not to waste any.
The base of your birdfeeder can be:
- a pinecone
- toilet paper tubes (add a few small sticks to your supply list for these)
- a bagel
If you use a pinecone:
- Wrap your yarn around the top and double back to the front then tie the two ends together.
- Spread peanut butter – really work it into the nooks and crannies of the pinecone
- Sprinkle with birdseed and hang
- poke two holes in the top and two (larger) holes in the bottom
- String yarn through the top and tie ends
- Spread peanut butter and roll in birdseed. (nice and messy)
- take a small stick and run it through the holes in the bottom so that it is sticking out a little on each side. This gives the birds a little perch. :)
If using a bagel:
- It’s a great way to use up stale bagels AND it’s a bonus for the birds because they will eat the bagel too!
- Spread peanut butter
- sprinkle birdseed on (or just turn it over and smush it into a pile of birdseed :)
- loop a string through the hole and hang!
Don’t let the fun and learning stop there!
- Visit your local library and check out books on birdwatching (especially bird watching books for kids!).
- Find out what birds are native to your area and keep track of how many of them you can find.
- Take photos of your birds or make sketches
