Preschool Project of the Week: Basic Preschool Fine Motor Skills

If you’ve got a little one at home head off to preschool this year, or if you just want to make sure they are prepared when they start kindergarten, here’s a couple skills to work on.

Proper Pencil/Crayon Grip:

This is one of the hardest things to unteach a child by the time they get to preschool so I am very appreciative when the parents take the time to correct this habit before they get to me in preschool.

Start your little one out with Triangular Crayons.  The three sided design makes it more difficult to hold the crayon incorrectly, encouraging proper grip.

You can also get  Triangular Chalk Sticks too.  Chalk is always fun.  :)

Scissor Skills

We really work on our scissors skills in preschool.  And these Alex Toys Squeeze Scissors are my favorite scissors.  The hardest part of using scissors for preschoolers is the opening motion.  These scissors have a lever that helps them spring back easily helping preschoolers learn the motions and build the thumb strength to get the scissors back open.
