Preschool Project of the Week: Plant something!
Preschool Skills: basic science concepts, responsibility (caring for the plants), sequencing events and understanding the passage of time
Planting seeds and watching them grow always excites my preschoolers. A few weeks ago, Bug and I built a planter box at Lowe’s so I decided that it was time for him to have his own garden. We planted some marigolds in it and I let Bug pick a pack of seeds and we planted some of the seeds in the front of the box.
When we plant seeds at preschool, we always plant them in clear plastic punch cups so we can see the roots. And then once they’ve sprouted, we transplant them to our outdoor flower box.
This is great to pair with the parts of a plant craft. Here are some preschool friendly concepts to go over when learning about the seed to plant cycle:
- roots always go down and plant always goes up from the seed
- plants need soil (dirt), water and sun to grow
- roots “drink” the water and leaves “drink” the sunshine
- all plants start as seeds
- all seeds produce only one kind of plant. Grass seeds will only grow grass, bean seeds will only grow beans etc.
- plants make more seeds to grow more plants
