Preschool Project of the Week: Land/Air/Sea Chart

Here is another transportation craft carrying on our theme from last week. This one is a fun project that helps with several skills and concepts!  And it’s another great use for all those free magazines you get because you’ll need pictures cut out from magazines.

Preschool Project of the WeekLand/Air/Sea Transportation Chart
Preschool Skills: fine motor/hand and eye coordination (gluing and assembling), reasoning, sorting/categorizing

For this craft you will need:

  • One sheet of blue and one sheet of brown construction paper
  • Glue
  • Pictures of cars, trucks, trains, boats, airplanes, helicopters, hot air balloons, bicycles, motorcycles, sleds, horses, cruise ships, sailboats, barges, etc, etc, you get the idea.  :)  Go through all those free magazines!  You can also find some online by doing a Google image search – just make sure when you print them, they are small! We are working with a small “canvas”! Also, I try to stick to real photos, not “clip art” or pictures of “toys”.   I need some more “air” pictures and I actually went into Microsoft Word on my computer and changed my clip art search to “photos” and typed in “airplane” and “helicopter” and got some good ones and since I was in Word, I was able to resize them.  In fact, you can see the two airplanes in our finished project.

I always do this first part myself: Cut the blue sheet of paper in half.  Glue one part to the bottom of the brown paper (I just run one or two lines of a glue stick across the brown paper and stick about 1/2-3/4 inch of the top of the blue paper to the bottom of the brown.)  Then do the same thing at the top with the other half of the blue.  (Clear as mud?  Check out the finished project picture and it’ll make sense)

I usually draw some “waves” on the bottom blue part and we glue a small cutout of a cloud shape or some white cotton balls to the top and then we talk about the three areas of our poster: Air, Land and Sea.  I also label each one (since they are simple words this is also a great spelling/sight word reinforcement).

After that, the rest is simple.  Determine where each “mode of transportation” picture goes and glue it on.  :)
