Frito-Lay’s new cleaner, greener manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona

Frito-Lay’s manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona is 75% Near Net Zero!  What exactly is ‘near net zero’?  It means that the facility now operates mostly on renewable energy and recycled water while producing nearly zero waste.

At the Frito-Lay Casa Grande plant, technologies have been implemented to recycle water, generate electricity and steam from renewable energy sources, and they achieved LEED certification and succeeded in sending nearly zero waste to the landfill. The Casa Grande plant is a great example of how Frito-Lay is working to minimize its impact on the environment.

Here are some numbers on the facility:

  • 75% off the wated the plant uses is recycled
  • They have reduce the greenhouse gas emission of the plant by 50%
  • Solar panels produce nearly 10 million KWHs to power the plant
  • Natural gas use has been reduced by 80% by using wood and agricultural waste in it’s new boiler for producing steam.
  • As of 2010, the Casa Grande plant had sent less than 1% of their overall waste to the landfill thanks to recycling and reusing food waste for cattle feed.
