I have missed several Toddler Talk Thursdays and I’m coming in kind of late on this one, but I certainly wanted to chime in!
Side note here: I do realize that very soon I will have to resign myself to the fact that I no longer have a toddler. Bug will be 3 in October. But until then…..
Today’s Toddler Talk Topic is: Toddler Reward Systems
I am delighted to say that Bug is COMPLETELY potty trained and has been for going on 7 weeks now. He has only had 2 accidents since donning the big boy “unnerwears” (his word) and they were both at home. No accidents at school and no accidents while out and about. WOO HOO!
So, yes, we did do a rewards system with him during the potty training proccess. It was real simple. M&M’s! If he succeded in going to the potty, he got three M&M’s. One BIG bag of M&M’s lasted us the whole potty training process. For the first couple weeks after we moved from pullups to big boy “unnerwears” he still got his treat for pottying. But after he really had the hang of it, we cut out the candy.
Some people may disagree with rewarding with candy. But it worked for us. AND that’s the only candy he got in a day’s time and we don’t keep a lot of sweet treats (cookies and such) around. So I was alright with him having a dozen or so M&M’s in a day for going to the potty. (You can also purchase the M&M’s minis if you really want to shrink the serving size. But I had a bag of regular ones that needed to be used.)
Right now, we don’t have a rewards system for anything. But I do see a chore chart in our future!
