Toddler Talk Thursday – Toddler Beds

When I saw the topic of this week’s Toddler Talk Thursday, I knew I had to chime in!  I have been battling with this issue for a few weeks now.

When do we move him to a toddler bed?

April 2009 – 6 months

Oh, I have gone back and forth about this!  He’s 28 months old and STILL in his crib.  I know other mothers moved their kids to toddler beds before the 2nd birthday.  Me…I’m just not ready.  I LIKE that he can’t go anywhere when he’s in his crib.  He has NEVER tried to climb out and seems perfectly content.  And I sleep better knowing he is contained.  His bedroom is on the other side of the house from ours – with a bathroom, basement steps and a kitchen in between = lots of stuff to get in to!  So I’ve already got a baby gate to put up at the door to his room when we do put him in a toddler bed.

But WHEN?

November 2009 – 13 months

Am I a bad mom that my almost-2-and-a-half-year-old son is still in a crib?  Someone please ease my mind!

I don’t think we had “toddler beds” when I was a kid.  My mom is not around for me to question on this.  But I remember getting my “big girl bed” (a twin sized bed with a canopy and butterfly sheet set).  It was shortly after we moved from our trailer to our house – I was 3 and a half.  So, was I in a crib until 3 and a half?  Well, what else would I have been in?  So are things different now-a-days?  Are we forcing our toddlers into “big kid beds” earlier than a generation ago did?  And why?  Is it the fault of the “toddler bed industry”?  I mean someone had to come up with this idea and convince people it was a good idea.

Christmas Eve 2010 – 26 months old

I don’t know.  I just can’t decide what to do about it!  Just please don’t tell me I have the oldest kid still in a crib!

Head on over to Toddler Talk Thursday and let’s talk toddlers!
