When I saw the topic of this week’s Toddler Talk Thursday, I knew I had to chime in! I have been battling with this issue for a few weeks now.
When do we move him to a toddler bed?
April 2009 – 6 months |
Oh, I have gone back and forth about this! He’s 28 months old and STILL in his crib. I know other mothers moved their kids to toddler beds before the 2nd birthday. Me…I’m just not ready. I LIKE that he can’t go anywhere when he’s in his crib. He has NEVER tried to climb out and seems perfectly content. And I sleep better knowing he is contained. His bedroom is on the other side of the house from ours – with a bathroom, basement steps and a kitchen in between = lots of stuff to get in to! So I’ve already got a baby gate to put up at the door to his room when we do put him in a toddler bed.
But WHEN?

Am I a bad mom that my almost-2-and-a-half-year-old son is still in a crib? Someone please ease my mind!
I don’t think we had “toddler beds” when I was a kid. My mom is not around for me to question on this. But I remember getting my “big girl bed” (a twin sized bed with a canopy and butterfly sheet set). It was shortly after we moved from our trailer to our house – I was 3 and a half. So, was I in a crib until 3 and a half? Well, what else would I have been in? So are things different now-a-days? Are we forcing our toddlers into “big kid beds” earlier than a generation ago did? And why? Is it the fault of the “toddler bed industry”? I mean someone had to come up with this idea and convince people it was a good idea.

I don’t know. I just can’t decide what to do about it! Just please don’t tell me I have the oldest kid still in a crib!
Head on over to Toddler Talk Thursday and let’s talk toddlers!
I put both of my kids in a Big Kid Bed by the time they were 2. I use bed rails for my son and for my daughter I just took the crib mattress and put it on the floor so if she rolled off she would just stay on the floor and sleep. They need to feel like BIG KIDS by the time they are 2 or 3. Move him to his Big Boy bed.
But I understand how you feel though, its hard, but so much fun watching their eyes get so big when they are in a BIG KID bed
We left our daughter in her crib until she asked for a big girl bed. I think she was around 2 1/2 or so. Her crib converted to a toddler bed and that's what she used until she was 4. Then she got regular bedroom furniture.
I, like you, liked the peace of mind that she was safe and sound where she was supposed to be all night long. She, like your son, never tried to climb out. I think it made her feel safe and secure too until she was mentally ready to move on. Thinking back ,it coincided with her no longer wearing a pull up at night and she needed to be able to access the bathroom if need be.
It's not like a pacifier you need to take away at some point because it is doing damage to them. Let them move on when they're ready IMO.
Will has never tried to climb out of his crib. I told Clay the day he tries or is successful with climbing out, we are taking to crib down. I am on the fence with the whole "toddler" bed. I like that it is small and low to the gound but I may just go ahead and get a twin bed and put those rails on it. I am in the same boat as you…I don't really know what to do. I am not a big fan of Will having the opportunity to roam around the house while we are asleep. UGH! This parenting this is hard! HAHA!
