Clothing deals

I have ALWAYS been a bargain shopper when it comes to clothes, thanks to my mom! I got to wear department store clothes at Wal-Mart (or better) prices when I was growing up. When we went to the mall we always hit the clearance racks. It’s the ONLY way I shop in department stores now.

Unfortunately, the store where we always got the best deals no longer exists – McRae’s. Oh, how I loved that store!

But I have found a replacement department store where I go to for everything! KOHL’S. I always hit the clearance racks first. Especially since I live in the south, summer clothes go on clearance in August to make room for back-to-school fall clothes, even though, weather-wise, you can get two more months out of your summer clothes! Same goes with all the other seasons. And if you should find something that’s completely winter in April, well, winter will eventually be back!

Kohl’s has men’s, women’s, children’s, teen, baby and maternity clothes, picture frames, candles, household goods (bedding, rugs, decorative items), kitchen ware (both cooking and serving items), jewelry, make-up, shoes, toys, greeting cards, giftwrap, and seasonal items all under one roof!

And I know that I should discourage the use of credit cards, but Kohl’s offers extra discounts to their card holders that can be used on clearance merchandise. Plus, you can use your credit card wisely, by purchasing your items and completing the transaction with your Kohl’s card. And then (at the same register you’re at) make a payment on your card to pay off what you just bought!

For example. If you have $200 to purchase Christmas gifts with, your Kohl’s card and a 20% coupon you could do this:
Go to Kohl’s and pick out your items up to $250 (but I only have $200 to spend!! Just wait…)
At the checkout you must use your Kohl’s charge to make the purchase if you want to use the 20% off coupon.
What’s 20% of $250?? You guessed it! $50!! So all you are actually paying $200 (plus tax) for your items!
After transaction is complete, tell the cashier you want to make a payment on your card. Pay the $200 you had saved for Christmas gifts and it’s like you never charged anything at all!!

And if you do this on a day when they are giving Kohl’s cash (where you get $10 vouchers for every $50 you spend good on a future purchase) then you would have just earned $50 to use later!!

Kohl’s is not rewarding me in any way for this post (though I wish they were!) I’ve just found so many great bargains there that I have to pass along what I know!! Kohl’s motto is “The more you know, the more you Kohl’s” and it’s true!

Now, on to my next topic for snagging new kids clothes at a good price. Wal-Mart’s clearance racks can boast some pretty good savings if you catch them at the right time.

I got this jacket that Gavin is wearing for $1. I can’t remember if I got it 2 summers ago while I was still pregnant or if it was last spring when he was 4/5 months old. Either way, it was in the off season clearance rack at Wal-Mart. It was a size 12 months which, being an October baby, I expected it to fit him when the weather cooled off around his first birthday. You can’t tell much about it, but it’s a cute little hoodie with safari animals on it.

At Wal-Mart last week I got these two long sleeves size 18 months shirts (Healthtex brand – one of my faves!) for $3/each. They were on the clearance rack but didn’t have a tag. I had the cashier check them when I got to the line. When they rang up $3 I said, “I’ll take ’em!” They are a little big on him now but that assures me that they will last ALL winter. Great deal!!
I got this shirt at the same time I got the two above. It was on the off-season clearance for $1!! He wore it over the weekend. And where we live we’re like to have days where the high gets to nearly 70 degrees through November (and even sometimes in December. I have worn short sleeves at Christmas!) So I have no doubt that we will get our dollar’s worth out of this shirt.
