I wish I could send my son to private schools around here but it’s a big expense. Plus, I went to the two largest ones myself and I realize that a lot of things could’ve changed in the last 20 years but I don’t have fond memories of either of them. Plus, they are different denominations than we are – there aren’t any drastic differences but I remember being taught things in chapel or Bible class and then my parents having to explain to me how/why we believe differently.

There are some smaller private schools around here but I still don’t think we could afford it.

I could have written this exact article other than changing preschool teacher to elementary/middle school teacher. This is exactly the biggest reason why I will NOT send my son to the public schools. He’ll stay in our small Christian school where I can at least know what he’s being taugh won’t need to be “untaught” when he gets home. He may still deal with a bully or hear things from other kids that he shouldn’t hear, but at least I’ll know I’m not throwing him to the wolves to be taught whatever agenda the powers that be decide is appropriate. If our school ever isn’t an option, he’ll be homeschooled.

SO true! Our local elementary schools have decided that all children moving on to 6th grade will now be middle schoolers. Sorry, but MY child (who is in 5th grade now) will NOT be going to middle school– those kids are M-E-A-N (and that’s just the ‘start of it’.) I am putting her into an elementary school that is K-8. I wish I could home school, but my husband (who is disabled) just couldn’t handle it and I work FT outside the home.

Ironically enough- you mentioned you’re a preschool teacher. YEAH! I know how hard you work and how little you make so my ‘hat’s off to you.’ I am the director of a Child Development Center in CA. I also teach preschoolers in Sunday School @ our church. Even children in faith based children are exposed. Unfortunately, it starts young ;o(, but with God it IS possible to raise amazing children. I know this because I also have a son who is a junior in highschool. I couldn’t ask for a better child.

Heather, I was chatting with a friend at church this past Sunday and her second grader came home asking what the “f” word meant because he heard kids in his class saying it – SECOND GRADE! I didn’t hear that word until I was in 8th grade! So I imagine you have your work cut out for you trying to keep 3 sets of precious eyes and ears away from the bad stuff!

There is so much out there to be afraid of! And I am not one to have irrational fears but putting my baby into public school terrifies me!

Thank you for sharing. You are SO correct that school can be a place where children are exposed to a muriad of things we, as parents, don’t want. We have 3 beautiful children in the public school system and I have to be super diligent about making sure my children get the messages WE want them to get and to teach them that they will not live by most of the principals that are taught socially in their surroundings.

I plan to homeschool my almost 5 year old, for food allergies as the main reason but wouldn’t be thrilled to send my baby out into this world anyway. It’s not what it used to be.
