Welcome! I have decided that 2016 is my year to get my house in order for real. I’ve created a week-by-week guide focusing on one area at a time. Yes, I realize a year is a long time. But I believe it’s the time line needed to make the thorough and permanent changes. No more surface organizing – we’re getting down and dirty!
So let’s get started! Each week we will have an assignment, an area of the home to clean up, clean out and organize. And since cluttered homes are harder to keep organized, there will be an additional challenge each week to help you purge items from your home!
52 Weeks to a More Organized Home | #6 The Kid’s Closets
Ugh – this one is tough. Yep, that’s Bug’s closet in the picture up there. And everything in that closet ishismostfavoritethingEVER. To clean UP the closet it’s going to have to be cleaned OUT. Something (and some other things) have got to go.
Truer words have never been spoken!
So, Moms, groan with me and then send the kids to grandma’s house so you can clean out their closet! It should be totally easy to meet your 2016 Clean Out Challenge quota for this week!
I searched Pinterest for “kids closet organization” and let me just say, I envy some of the space you people have. But with that said, I will point out some of the useful things I found!
We are using the sweater organizer idea – it’s holding off season clothes in the back of the closet. May not be the best use of it. But if I hang it in the middle then we lose floor space. As you can see, that’s need for toys.
There is also a shoe organizer hanging on the door but it’s being under-utilized at the moment. When he was a baby, it’s where I kept those tiny baby socks, bibs and other odds and ends. Now, it’s got a random spattering of stuff and that’s it. So my first order of business will be to see what I can now use it for that would help with the mess.
And, this isn’t particularly closet related, but I’ve tried folding his clothes in his drawers this way but that just doesn’t work. Have you tried it?
I guess the problem I have is that I need the closet to function as both clothes and toy storage. UGH. But I do like what Carrie Dahlen did here:
I supposed I could use some of the cubes and baskets for toys. They don’t all have to be filled with clothes. Or maybe I need to make the closet all clothes and fill the dresser with toys? Idk…
I had crates in the closet for toy storage stack similar to this idea at AJsArts , but 2 high and 2 wide instead. It kinda worked. Maybe I need to revisit this idea and just make it taller.
And I like House Dressing Style’s hat organization idea. I need to do this for Hubs!

Your additional challenge this week:
- Let’s keep returning things to their places. Make it a habit this week to grab one thing from a room before you leave that doesn’t belong in that room and either return it where it belongs, trash it, or add it to the donate box.
- If you’re doing the 2016 Clean Out Challenge you should have tossed around 200 items already and you’ll need to toss out about 40 items over this week. (For what it’s worth, I’m NOT counting things going in the yard sale boxes as part of my 2,016 items. I’ll count them when they’ve actually sold. I’m only counting things trashed, re-homed or taken to goodwill)
