Christmas Fun with the Kids: Reindeer Food Recipe!

Everyone leaves milk and cookies out for Santa.  But the reindeer get hungry too!

One fun thing we started doing is putting out “reindeer food” on Christmas Eve.  Silly Bug (just 2 at the time) thought we were actually feeding the lighted deer in the yard.  So now it’s become a thing that we leave the food in front of the lighted reindeer in the yard.

Here’s how you make “reindeer food”:

Dry Oats
Sugar and/or red and green sprinkles
Glitter

How much of each depends on how big a batch of reindeer food you want.  I put a small amount of each ingredient  out in three measuring cups and let Bug dump them in a bowl and stir them up with a wooden spoon.  About 1/2 cup oats, 1/4 cup sugar and a handful of sprinkles and glitter is plenty for one child to scatter.  If your kids are older, it may be hard to convince that half a cup of food will feed ALL of the reindeer.  I’ll let you handle that.  LOL

Here’s the reason why those three things are in Reindeer Food:

Oats because it’s what the reindeer eat.
Sugar (and/or sprinkles) because it makes it sweet.
Add the glitter to make it sparkle in the glow of the Christmas lights night and help the reindeer find it.

If you’re looking for a little something for your child to pass out to their classmates or to give to the neighborhood kids this is real simple to make a batch of and put in plastic baggies.

I’ve included a printable tag you can download to add to the bags of reindeer food.

I would suggest that you help the kids scatter it very broadly.  Some of ours ended up in one big pile the first time we did it and it rained Christmas night and we woke up to oatmeal in the yard.  :D

:]  Happy Reindeer Feeding!
