The Holidays are fast approaching and winter is just around the corner so now is the perfect time to bring out the mixer and cookie sheets!

Every Tuesday now through Christmas you will be able to see the Mavens of Money’s favorite cookies recipes in a Holiday Cookie Swap. Ranging from long held family traditions to brand new recipes to old time favorites they will be given each Tuesday in hopes that you will try a few and love them too!

And the best part?! You can participate as well! Simply post your recipes at the bottom of The Centsible Family’s post and share with other readers your favorite cookies, bars, or treat recipes! At the end of the four weeks we will showcase a few of YOUR recipes in their own post!

Painted Cookies

  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 c sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-1/2 c all purpose flour
  • royal Icing (either recipe below or store bought)
  • food coloring


  • Using an electric mixer beat butter in large mixing bowl.  Add sugar, baking powder, baking soda and optional salt. Once combined add sour cream or yogurt, egg and vanilla extract. Add flour slowly mixing as much as you can. Use wooden spoon to mix in any leftover flour.
    Divide dough in half, cover and then chill 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 375
  • Spread flour on counter or another solid surface. Roll one half of dough at a time until at least 1/4″ thick (I like my cookies thick so I am for 1/4″ to 1/2″). Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on parchment paper lined cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 7-8 minutes or until edges are firm but not burnt. Spread on cookie rack to cool.
  • Once cookies are cool, spread royal icing on top and allow to dry. Paint designs on each cookie using the foot coloring and a small paintbrush (just for food).

Royal Icing

  • 2 tbsp egg whites or meringue powder
  • 1/4 c water
  • 2-3/4 c sifted powder sugar


  1. Beat egg white or meringue powder and water together
  2. Slowly beat in powdered sugar


Grandma’s Peanut Butter Scotchies

  • 6 c Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 c creamy peanut butter
  • 12 oz pkg butterscotch chips


    1. Add cereal to a large mixing bowl; set aside.
    2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add peanut butter and stir for 30 seconds. Add butterscotch chips and stir constantly until chips have melted.
    3. Pour butterscotch mixture over cereal and gently stir with wooden spoon until combined. Let cool for a few minutes then drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Cool until set and enjoy!
