Monday’s Money Saving Recipe – Homemade Donuts

I have fond memories of doing this when I was a kid.  We would set up in the kitchen assembly line style and make these donuts.  My would fry them and dad and I would pick which ones would go into the bowl of confectioner’s sugar, brown sugar or cinnamon sugar mix.  And which ones would go into our mouths.  :)
You take refrigerated biscuit dough (or you can use homemade biscuit dough if you’d rather).  Roll it out and cut it into strips then into squares.  Or if you want them to look like donuts, then take the refrigerated biscuits and cut a hole in the center.  Don’t forget to use the centers too, to make donut holes!  We made them look like donuts before but most often, we just cut them into squares.
Drop into hot oil and fry til golden.  Flip and fry until other side is golden.  Remove and drain on paper towel lined plate.  But only for a moment!  While still hot, roll in coating of your choice.  We always did 3 kinds:  confectioner’s sugar, brown sugar (quite possibly my favorite) and a cinnamon sugar mixture.
I can’t wait until Gavin gets a little older and we can do this.  I haven’t made donuts, I guess since before I got married.  But as I sit here typing, I can still taste them!  That’s how much they are embedded in my memory!
